Miss Pony and Sister Lane approve Candy’s role as caretaker and teacher. Upon returning from an outing, Candy mistakes Mr. George for Archibald and Alistear. George arrives to take Candy to London for education before she can teach. The adults agree this is best. Upset, Candy flees with Jimmy in a storm. Jimmy contracts a high fever, and Candy fails to help him. Adults catch up, and George holds Jimmy. Sister Lane slaps the panicked Candy. She realizes she is a playmate, not a caretaker. Candy accepts the trip to London. Jimmy swears he hates her for breaking her promise.
