Candy evades Terry at Saint Paul's Academy but cannot forget their kiss. Albert, working in an African hospital, sends a letter asking Candy to greet Terry. Obligated, Candy finds Terry, who makes her feel good. Envious, Eliza warns Terry about Candy, but he retorts that she should look in the mirror. Eliza discovers Patricia and Alistear use a hollow tree for secret letters and exploits this to arrange a secret meeting for Candy and Terry in the stables. Sister Gray arrives with a patrol and witnesses Eliza and Louisa. Consequently, Sister Gray expels Candy and confines Terry for a week. Candy is imprisoned in an inescapable tower, weeping over the injustice.
