Sister Margaret, Annie, Patricia, and the Cornwell brothers confront Sister Gray regarding Candy's disappearance. Eliza accuses Candy of fleeing with Terry, but Sister Gray denies this claim. While friends travel to Southampton, Mr. George informs Sister Gray that Candy possesses no funds. Candy previously received a ride from farmer Arnold but disembarked at Dover due to his advice. Lacking money, she trades labor for food and lodging. She secures employment at a bed and breakfast, earning enough to eventually fund her journey to Southampton and board a vessel bound for the United States.
