Candy, a laborer saving for passage to the US, overhears a man planning to sell her to a tavern landlady. She escapes with his cart into the forest, eventually hiding in the haycart of widower Mr. Carson. He only discovers her presence upon reaching his farm and finding apples eaten by his children. Candy realizes she lost her savings and is now farther from Southampton than before. Mr. Carson’s children, Sam, Jeff, and Susy, hide her in the barn and share a midnight snack while discussing their late mother and Mount Rodney. Susy falls ill with a high fever, but Mr. Carson refuses to call a doctor, blaming the physician for his wife's death and preferring to harm him rather than seek medical aid.
