Fearing for Susy's life, Candy and Sam rush to town to request the doctor's assistance. Unable to leave due to safety concerns, the doctor provides Candy with instructions to treat Susy's measles. As Susy recovers, Mr. Carson attributes the improvement solely to Candy's efforts, remaining hostile toward the doctor. However, Mr. Carson's sons and Candy clarify that their medical knowledge derives from the doctor, ending the conflict. The doctor then examines Susy and praises Candy's nursing skills. The children grow attached to her, but Mr. Carson advises her to depart soon to avoid causing further pain. Understanding his point, Candy prepares to leave and accepts a letter of introduction to his friend Juskin in Southampton.
