A metal fragment impales Reuenthal in the chest, yet he continues issuing tactical orders while growing pale. Meanwhile, Grillpalzer surrenders to Wahlen's fleet. Mecklinger discovers Terraism evidence concealed by Grillpalzer on Uruvasi and orders his arrest. Reuenthal returns to Heinessen with only 10% of his fleet remaining after the betrayal and subsequent engagement.

Reuenthal's Final Days and the Aftermath of His Death
Dec 17, 1996Reuenthal delegates domestic politics to Elsheimer and kills Trüniht after discussing ambitions and Reinhard. Elfriede von Kohlrausch visits with her baby, prompting Reuenthal to request her son be given to Mittermeyer. On November 14th, Space Calendar 800, New Imperial Year 2, Reuenthal dies at age 33. Mittermeyer arrives on Heinessen but misses his friend. Admiral Bergengrün, who served under Kircheis, commits suicide upon hearing of Reuenthal's death, having lost both commanders to political schemes. Lang confesses to his actions and implicates Rubinsky, who remains missing.

Ministers subsequently discuss joint rulership and succession rights for the upcoming Empress. Princess Grünewald visits the couple on Phezzan. On January 29th, Reinhard and Hilda are wed. However, Oberstein interrupts the ceremony midway to report that riots have broken out in Heinessen.

Wahlan quells the unrest by distributing military food supplies, while Imperial admirals abandon plans to campaign against Iserlohn due to depleted treasury funds from ongoing expeditions. Meanwhile, on Iserlohn, Julian argues that the instability in Alliance territory presents an ideal opportunity to reclaim lost lands. Despite republican distrust regarding Mecklinger’s passage through the corridor, Julian advocates for immediate action, believing that Reinhard would disdain a cautious successor. Consequently, he resolves to initiate the battle, leveraging the current political climate and his assessment of Imperial leadership expectations to justify the offensive against the Empire.

This maneuver draws Wagenseil’s ships into the effective range of the Iserlohn Thor hammer cannon, resulting in significant losses. As the cannon recharges, Wahlan attempts a rear assault on the fortress. Merkatz exploits a blind spot to ambush Wahlan’s fleet, while Julian maneuvers around the fortress to complete a pincer formation. The Thor hammer fires twice more, inflicting severe damage on the encircled enemy forces. Meanwhile, Reinhard anticipates a counterattack from Phezzan but is confined to bed by a high fever.

Oberstein is chosen to handle the new problems for the Empire. Oberstein takes Müller and Bittenfeld with him on the campaign. News of the Iserlohn victory bypasses Imperial news censors, causing many protests. Oberstein orders the arrest of all former public officials in the Alliance. Oberstein infuriates Müller, Bittenfeld, and Wahlen with his plan of using hostages to draw out the forces of Iserlohn. On Iserlohn, the Julian fleet wonders what to do if the Empire were to abandon Heinessen and use it as a lure.

Müller urges Bittenfeld to apologize to Oberstein to reduce violence among Imperial troops. Meanwhile, the Iserlohn group receives news of the unrest on Heinessen. They decide to divide their leadership and accept negotiations on Heinessen for the release of the hostages.

Following reports of the riots and martial law in Heinessen, Julian's envoy fleet returns to Iserlohn. Meanwhile, Rubinsky is taken into custody by Oberstein's agents. In response, Reinhard orders the immediate release of all political prisoners and dispatches Müller to invite the Julian envoy to return to Heinessen for further negotiations.

Feb 11, 1997Terraists strike critical infrastructure across Phezzan, severing contact with High Admiral Kesler until they storm Stehibalm Schloss, the temporary residence of Hilde and Grünewald. Marika von Feuerbach, a servant to Hilde, guides Kesler and his military police to the pair just before they are assassinated. Hilde is transported to a hospital where she delivers the new prince of the Lohengramm dynasty. Kesler subsequently employs torture and truth serum on the captured Terraists, effectively eradicating their influence from Phezzan. Following these events, Reinhard officially names his newborn son Alexander Siegfried von Lohengramm.

Feb 18, 1997In late May of Space Calendar 801, New Imperial Calendar 3, a refugee ship pursued by Imperial vessels encounters the Julian fleet, prompting an engagement. Both sides eventually commit their full strength, with the Imperial fleet comprising 51,700 ships against the Julian fleet's 9,800. The fleets maneuver cautiously, rotating front-line forces. Mid-battle, Reinhard collapses, causing a communications blackout that frustrates Imperial admirals. Poplan intercepts transmissions between Mittermeyer's ship and Reinhard's flagship. Consequently, the Julian fleet opts to board the Brunhilde using melee infantry to gain an advantage in the escalating conflict.

Julian successfully reaches Reinhard’s room to initiate negotiations. Following these events, a truce is officially announced between the conflicting parties.

In the hospital, Rubinsky commits suicide, triggering brainwave-activated bombs beneath Heinessenpolis. Reinhard and Julian discuss political next steps, agreeing to grant Heinessen and its surrounding systems autonomy in exchange for Iserlohn. They also consider drafting a constitution for the Empire. Finally, staff members from both Julian and Reinhard prepare to depart for Phezzan.

Oberstein spreads rumors that the Kaiser intends to destroy Earth to flush out remaining Terraists. Julian and his allies identify the cultists at a hotel and eliminate them. Oberstein sacrifices himself as bait for the Kaiser, though his death is not confirmed. Reinhard prepares to die, surrounded by admirals and family, and entrusts his son to Mittermeyer’s adopted heir. The Julian fleet disperses. On July 26th of Space Calendar 801, New Imperial Calendar 3, Reinhard dies, leaving the Empire and constitutional reform decisions to his wife. At the Mittermeyer estate, young Felix reaches for the stars.
