Upon waking, Mei encounters Ogai's aunt, who rejects her status as fiancée despite Ogai's plan to introduce her at a Rokumeikan ball. Ogai takes Mei to Asakusa for ice cream and photos. At the Tokiwa Theater, they analyze Hamlet's opening lines before watching Otojirou perform in The Golden Demon by Kouyou Ozaki. Later, Ogai praises Mei's table manners during beefsteak, and they meet noblewoman Arima and her daughter Shino, who discover Mei's engagement. Shunso reminds Mei of Ogai's high standing. Finally, Mei meets Otojirou disguised as the geisha Otoyakko, who promises to help her mature.
