Sonoko, Ran, and Conan visit an arcade and encounter their high school English teacher, Jodie Starling, who is a dedicated gamer. Jodie introduces Ran to a virtual reality fighting game that simulates real pain. Ran loses to a player named Kengo Bitou, who taunts her during the match. Bitou then plays against his rival, Takayasu Shimizu, with the battle displayed on a large screen. Although Bitou’s avatar dominates, he stops abruptly at the climax. The arcade patrons discover Bitou is dead and call the police. Investigators review security footage and narrow the suspect list to four individuals: Toshitsugu Emori, a middle-aged taxi driver; Hitoshi Dejima, an arcade employee; Shimizu; and Jodie.
