Conan determines the button belongs to Masuko and deciphers her message via the Chinese zodiac, identifying Shinji Mizunoe as the culprit. He explains that the ninth zodiac sign, Monkey, corresponds to the character shin, while the ninth celestial stem Ren translates to Mizunoe. Conan reveals Masuko was the original Rooster Man and Mizunoe impersonated him to commit murder. After Ran is found with the button, Mizunoe attacks her, tasing her and stealing her wallet. Before killing her, he reads a love fortune suggesting she trust herself. Ran realizes Sonoko swapped the fortunes, which removes her hesitation regarding mannish conduct. She then easily incapacitates Mizunoe.
