In the year G.C. 0051, a half-century has passed since first contact with aliens, and humans have developed faster-than-light travel, forming a planetary commonwealth. Robby Yarge, a 30-something freelance writer, faces a series of misfortunes: he loses his job, is dumped by his girlfriend, nearly dies in an accident, and is pursued by debt collectors. After a bag snatcher steals his belongings, Hatchi Kita, an 18-year-old part-timer, helps Robby recover his bag. Grateful, Robby invites Hatchi to dinner, and they briefly connect before parting ways. Hatchi later reappears as a debt collector working for loan shark Yan, leading to a chase involving Yan and his subordinates Aro and Gra. Robby evades them and flees to space, aiming for Isekandar, a distant planet rumored to grant happiness. He assumes he is alone until he finds Hatchi aboard his ship. The two agree to travel together in search of Isekandar.
