Rumors spread about a man named Hitokiri Battousai terrorizing Tokyo citizens. Kaoru Kamiya, who runs a small dojo, decides to capture him. She encounters a swordsman with a cross-shaped scar but dismisses him as a mere wanderer, inviting him to stay at her family's dojo. Later, this wanderer defeats a man impersonating Battousai. Under pressure, he reveals his true identity as Kenshin Himura, the actual Hitokiri Battousai feared during the Bakumatsu period. Kaoru insists that she is inviting the wanderer to remain, not the assassin. She urges him to stay at her place, distinguishing between his past as a killer and his current life as a guest.
