Gon boards a ship with other candidates, including Kurapika, who seeks vengeance against the Phantom Troupe for massacring his clan, and Leorio, who claims to want money but is actually kind-hearted. During a violent storm, the captain reveals himself as an examiner. After Gon saves a crew member who falls overboard, he and the others assist in the rescue. This act of bravery earns the captain's respect, and he transports the trio to the port nearest the exam site.

Gon and Killua become separated from Leorio and Kurapika, leading to separate monster attacks. Leorio and Kurapika encounter Hisoka, who effortlessly defeats a group of candidates viewing him as a threat. After Leorio and Kurapika flee in different directions, Leorio returns to fight but is severely beaten and knocked out by Hisoka. Gon arrives and strikes Hisoka with a fishing rod to save Leorio. Instead of killing them, Hisoka reveals this was a test and spares them. He carries the unconscious Leorio to the second venue, collaborating with an unknown candidate. After failing to cook carnivorous pigs, Chairman Netero intervenes to correct Menchi’s bias, allowing her to stay if she joins the test. The retest requires boiling spider eagle eggs from Mt. Split-in-Half. Candidates ride Netero’s airship and jump into a dangerous ravine to retrieve them. While some perish or refuse, Gon successfully obtains eggs by observing Menchi.
