A politician hides a safe key in an alley while fleeing the Kenwadan, a gang of masked men. A dog retrieves the key, leading the pursuers into a river. The next morning, Sanosuke finds the dog while praying for dice luck and brings it to the dojo under Megumi Takani’s care. He names the dog Notaro, who disrupts the group by eating their food and burying their belongings. Sanosuke posts flyers to find the owner, allowing the Kenwadan to locate the animal. While Kenshin and Yahiko learn of the Kenwadan situation from the police, Sanosuke confronts and defeats the gang in a nearby forest to protect the dog.
