After Tae Sekihara explains the meaning of an engagement ring, Kaoru begins daydreaming about marrying Kenshin. Meanwhile, Kenshin goes fishing and returns with a catfish containing an engagement ring. Unaware of its significance, he accepts Tae's advice to give it to Kaoru. Sanosuke encounters a man attempting suicide and learns the ring originally belonged to him, having been discarded due to a misunderstanding with his fiancée. Sanosuke recruits Kenshin and Yahiko to retrieve the ring without hurting Kaoru. The trio temporarily intoxicates Kaoru to confess the truth before returning the ring to its rightful owner, allowing him to reconcile with his fiancée.
