EP 1Death Gun shoots a player in Gun Gale Online, prompting Kirito to investigate real-world deaths linked to the game.
Jul 5, 2014Approximately one year after the Sword Art Online incident, the VRMMORPG Gun Gale Online becomes popular in Japan. During a stream, a figure named Death Gun shoots at the avatar of top player XeXeeD, causing him to disconnect violently. A month later, Kazuto Kirigaya meets Kikuoka Seijiro from the Ministry of Internal Affairs' Virtual Division. Kikuoka reveals that XeXeeD died of acute heart failure shortly after the incident and presents evidence of a similar death involving another Gun Gale Online user. Despite Kazuto's skepticism that a game can cause heart failure, Kikuoka suspects Death Gun targets professional players and asks Kazuto to resume his Kirito identity to investigate. While Kazuto considers this request while spending time with Asuna at the park, the sniper Sinon remains in peak condition within Gun Gale Online.
EP 2Sinon recalls defeating a boss in GGO and wins a duel against Behemoth in the present.
Jul 12, 2014In a flashback on September 14, 2025, Sinon falls into a trap chute beneath SBC Gurokken in GGO. Facing a boss-class monster, she initially intends to die but realizes her position is safe. By conserving ammunition and targeting weak spots, she defeats the enemy and obtains the PGM Ultima Ratio Hecate II. In the present, Sinon attempts to snipe an enemy during an ambush, but the target is Behemoth, a bodyguard wielding an aminigun. He overwhelms her squadron, leaving only Sinon and Behemoth alive. While falling through the air, Sinon successfully shoots Behemoth with her new rifle, securing victory despite severe avatar damage. Meanwhile, in Alfheim Online, Kirito prepares to reveal something important to Asuna.
EP 3Shino confronts her traumatic past involving a gunman while Kirito prepares to enter GGO.
Jul 19, 2014Shino Asada is bullied by classmates led by Endou but is rescued by Kyouji Shinkawa, who introduced her to Gun Gale Online for exposure therapy regarding her gun phobia. Later, handling a replica weapon triggers a flashback to when she was eleven years old. During a postal office robbery, a gunman shot an employee and threatened Shino’s mother. Shino wrestled the weapon away and killed the attacker, an event that now causes her severe panic. Meanwhile, Kirito tells Asuna he will transfer his Avatar to Gun Gale Online, a decision she supports. Assuming the identity of Kazuto, he visits the hospital to log in, with nurse Aki Natsuki monitoring his physical condition. Shino also logs into the game. Unbeknownst to them, the antagonist Death Gun observes an online discussion about himself and views a photograph of Sinon with a sinister expression.
EP 4Kirito enters Gun Gale Online and seeks BoB registration with Sinon
Jul 26, 2014Kirito logs into Gun Gale Online, confused by his avatar’s feminine appearance, which causes male players to mistake him for a girl. Seeking leads on Death Gun, he encounters Sinon and asks for directions to the General Governor's Office to register for the BoPvP mode Bullet of Bullets. Sinon, also mistaking him for a female, directs him to a market for gear. Lacking funds, Kirito plays the rigged arcade game Untouchable, using skills from Alfheim Online to dodge bullets and win the prize money. With Sinon’s help, he buys a Photon Sword and an FN Five-seven. Realizing they have only ten minutes to reach the office, Kirito commandeers a buggy and speeds toward the General Governor's Office with Sinon, who urges him to drive faster.
EP 5Kirito and Sinon register for BoB preliminaries while Kirito faces a mysterious opponent with a familiar tattoo.
Aug 2, 2014Kirito and Sinon reach the General Governor's Office to register for the Battle of Bullet tournament. Kirito leaves his real-life details blank, resulting in placement in the same block as Sinon, allowing both to advance to the finals via the ladder system. A preliminary qualifying round precedes the main event, where Kirito promises Sinon a fair fight if they meet. An embarrassing incident in the changing room leads Kirito to reveal his gender, creating tension between them. Sinon insists he reach the finals so she can defeat him, declaring her intent to eliminate strong players, which briefly makes Kirito suspect her of being Death Gun. They later encounter Kyouji in his Spiegel avatar. In his first battle, Kirito struggles initially but wins using his Photon Sword. Back in the waiting area, he confronts Death Gun, who questions if he is the real deal. Kirito notices a tattoo on Death Gun's wrist, identifying it as the mark of the Laughing Coffin guild from Sword Art Online.
EP 6Kirito confronts his past while facing Sinon in a tense final duel
Aug 9, 2014Kirito recalls his battle with Laughing Coffin in SAO, realizing the player who confronted him was Death Gun. After winning his next duel, he reaches the finals alongside Sinon. During their match, Sinon fires repeatedly but misses, leading to a confrontation where Kirito apologizes and proposes a rematch with specific rules. He moves ten meters away and throws a bullet to the ground to start the fight. Despite Sinon’s Hecate having a one-hundred percent hit rate at that distance, Kirito slices her bullet in half and holds her at the tip of his Photon Sword. He reveals he predicted her aim by watching her eyes, demonstrating that his strength transcends the virtual game. Kirito attributes his prowess to skill rather than his SAO experiences and asks Sinon to surrender, stating he does not wish to defeat a girl. Enraged, she complies, vowing that the next encounter will be different.
EP 7Suguha confronts Kazuto about BoB while Sinon vents to Kyouji and Kazito logs into GGO.
Aug 16, 2014Suguha Kirigaya confronts Kazuto Kirigaya about his BoB participation, revealing she knows from Asuna. She expresses worry over his demeanor, prompting a promise of his safe return. Sinon vents anger to Kyouji, who attempts a hug that she rejects. Aki offers counseling to Kazuto, who confesses to killing Laughing Coffin members in SAO. Aki acknowledges the act was for protection but cannot lift the burden. Kazuto then logs into GGO. In Alfheim Online, Asuna, Leafa, Klein, Lisbeth, and Silica prepare to watch the BoB tournament broadcast. Sinon meets Kirito at the General Governor's Office, where they declare their determination not to lose.
EP 8Kirito anticipates Death Gun's BoB entry and enlists Sinon's help to identify unknown competitors.
Aug 23, 2014Kirito expects Death Gun to join the Bullet of Bullets tournament under an alias and vows to confront him. He persuades Sinon to explain the competition's rules, then asks if she knows any participants who did not compete in previous years. Discovering three such players, Kirito reveals his motives, leading Sinon to deduce he is a Sword Art Online survivor. During the event, Sinon targets Dyne and Pale Rider but is stopped by Kirito, who orders her to observe their fight instead. After Pale Rider defeats Dyne, he is stunned by a silenced shot. Death Gun emerges from the bridge to finish Pale Rider, prompting Kirito to urge a confused Sinon to shoot the attacker immediately.
EP 9Sinon confronts Death Gun who kills Pale Rider and reveals his identity using PoH's catchphrase.
Aug 30, 2014Death Gun dodges Sinon’s shot and kills Pale Rider, then introduces himself using PoH’s Laughing Coffin catchphrase. Sinon fails to scan his name and assumes he moved underwater, so she and Kirito pursue him to the Lost City. After failing to locate him, they monitor the next scan and spot Sterben and Gunner X. Suspecting Gunner X is Death Gun due to the reversed name, they rush to a stadium where Sterben vanishes. They split up to hunt a sniper, but Sinon is stunned before she can take position. Death Gun appears, revealing himself as Sterben, and threatens to kill her while brandishing the Type 54 Black Star, the weapon Sinon used to kill a post office robber.
EP 10Kirito rescues Sinon from Death Gun using a buggy and a cave hideout.
Sep 6, 2014Kirito interrupts Death Gun’s attack on Sinon by shooting his shoulder and deploying smoke, allowing them to flee to a buggy rental point. Kirito forces Sinon to disable a mechanical horse, but she freezes, enabling Death Gun to pursue them. During the chase, Death Gun fires at the pair, terrifying Sinon. Kirito assists her in pulling the trigger to fire back, but the bullet strikes a truck’s fuel tank instead, causing an explosion that forces Death Gun to abandon his mount. The duo escapes into the desert and hides in a cave to avoid satellite detection. Inside the shelter, both characters reveal to each other that they have killed someone in their past.
EP 11Kirito deduces Death Gun's real-life assassination method and identity
Sep 13, 2014Sinon questions Kirito about his past in SAO, leading him to explain that he accepts the burden of his victims rather than overcoming it. Reflecting on Death Gun’s ability to stop hearts, Kirito realizes the sniper rifle was used in-game while the real-life kill involved a lethal injection. He deduces that the assassin required real-world preparation and likely spied on players at the General Governor's Office. Kirito concludes that Death Gun consists of two individuals: one shooting in-game and another killing in reality. Meanwhile, Kikuoka Seijiro logs into ALO as Chrysheight at Asuna’s request. After Yui shares gathered information, Chrysheight briefs Asuna, who then seeks Kazuto’s location to visit him in person. Back in GGO, Kirito and Sinon plan their next move, only to discover they are being recorded by a hidden camera.
EP 12Kirito deduces Death Gun has accomplices and sets a trap with Sinon and Dark Wind.
Sep 20, 2014Kirito discovers that twenty-four players have died, leaving only himself and Dark Wind visible on the map. He suspects Death Gun has multiple real-world accomplices since the casualty count does not match the known survivors. To protect Dark Wind, Kirito and Sinon devise a plan where Sinon provides sniper support. When Death Gun attacks Kirito, he dodges the bullet by sensing the trajectory. Dark Wind is killed by Sinon after taking cover. Sinon then engages Death Gun, who spots her after her initial undetected shot. They exchange fire simultaneously; Sinon destroys Death Gun's weapon while he breaks her scope. Death Gun then draws an estoc and overpowers Kirito with superior speed following a brief conversation.
EP 13Kirito defeats Death Gun and Sinon ends the tournament while Kyouji attacks Shino
Sep 27, 2014Death Gun severely injures Kirito, who recalls a similar player from the Laughing Coffin raid and identifies his opponent as Red-Eyed XaXa. Sinon distracts XaXa with a fake bullet trajectory, allowing Kirito to break his invisibility cloak with a sidearm shot. Drawing on his Sword Art Online strength, Kirito slices XaXa in half, though the dying man warns that their conflict is not finished. Kirito and Sinon agree to end the BoB tournament by committing double suicide with a grenade, revealing their real names to each other. Upon logging out, Kirito notices another participant disconnected, confirming multiple accomplices. In the real world, Kyouji visits Shino, reveals himself as Death Gun’s second accomplice, and attempts to kill her with a syringe. Kazuto bursts in to defend Shino, who recognizes him as Kirito, and urges her to flee.
EP 14Shino confronts her past while Kazuto introduces her to allies and a woman she saved.
Oct 4, 2014Kazuto defends against Kyouji’s poison injection attempt, protected by an electrode on his chest. Shino incapacitates Kyouji with a stereo and later disarms Endou, who threatened her with a model gun. Several days later, Kazuto takes Shino to report to Kikuoka, revealing that third conspirator Johnny Black escaped while Kyouji and his brother XaXa were institutionalized. Kazuto then brings Shino to the Dicey Cafe to meet Asuna and Rika. He introduces her to Sachie Oosawa, a post office worker Shino saved during a robbery. Sachie reveals she was pregnant, meaning Shino also saved her daughter, Mizue. Kazuto encourages Shino to forgive herself for the robbery by focusing on the lives she saved. Overcome with emotion, Shino cries tears of happiness.
EP 15The group seeks the Holy Sword Excaliber in Jötunheimr but encounters a tragic massacre ordered by King Þrym.
Oct 18, 2014Near the year's end, Suguha informs Kazuto about the discovery of the Holy Sword Excaliber in ALO. They invite Asuna, Klein, Lisbeth, Silica, and Sinon to tackle the sky dungeon in Jötunheimr. After equipping gear at Lisbeth's shop and buying potions, the party enters Jötunheimr through a secret Alne passage. At the tunnel's end, Leafa summons Tonkii, a flying evil-god-class monster friend from months prior, to fly them to the dungeon. Tonkii suddenly dives, revealing players cooperating with humanoid evil-god-class monsters to slaughter Tonkii's beast kin. The Queen of the Lake, Urðr, appears and explains that King Þrym threw Excaliber into her spring, freezing Jötunheimr. If Tonkii's kin perish, Urðr loses power, allowing Þrym to invade Alfheim. She asks the fairies to retrieve Excaliber from the ice dungeon, Þrymheimr, to stop this threat.
EP 16Yui explains the stakes at Thrymheim's entrance as the group faces minotaurs and Freyja.
Oct 25, 2014At the entrance to Thrymheim, Yui reveals that the Cardinal System's Automatic Quest Generation Function created their mission. Failure triggers Ragnarok, a final war event that destroys ALO, motivating the group to succeed. At the second floor, they fight two minotaurs using elemental Sword Skills that cause temporary rigidity. Kirito demonstrates a new technique to chain consecutive Sword Skills with each sword, avoiding the delay and defeating the enemies. After defeating the boss guarding the lowest floor's entrance, they find a female NPC in an ice cage. While others suspect a trap, Klein frees her due to her beauty. She introduces herself as Freyja and asks to join the party, which Kirito reluctantly accepts. After recharging buffs, the group enters the throne room to face Thrym, the massive king of the frost giants.
EP 17The group defeats Thrym with Freyja's help and retrieves Excaliber from Þrymheimr.
Nov 1, 2014Thrym battles the group until Freyja intervenes, freezing them with ice breath before Thrym is distracted by Sinon. Kirito retrieves a golden hammer, allowing Freyja to transform into Thor, who joins the fight and defeats Thrym. Thor rewards Klein with Mjölnir, though he is dissatisfied, and a secret staircase reveals Excaliber at the bottom of Þrymheimr. Kirito pulls the sword from ice, causing the area to collapse. Tonkii saves them from the chasm, and Kirito discards the heavy sword, but Sinon retrieves it with a magic arrow. She returns it to Kirito with a condition that causes jealousy among the others. As the chasm floods and new trees grow, Urðr and her sisters thank the group for saving Jötunheimr, with Urðr gifting Excaliber to Kirito. Later, Kazuto, Suguha, and Shino test a device for Yui before celebrating the quest's end with lunch.
EP 18The Forest House: ALO Update and the Mystery of Absolute Sword
Nov 8, 2014Kazuto and Asuna discuss their former Aincrad residence while Agil reveals the New Aincrad update covering floors 21 through 30. On Christmas Eve, the group defeats the 21st Floor Boss, reaches the 22nd Floor, and repurchases their old home. While doing homework, Lisbeth mentions Absolute Sword, an undefeated player on the 24th Floor island wielding an 11-hit Original Sword Skill. Asuna, unaware due to being offline during the New Year, learns of the threat. Leafa and Lisbeth are easily defeated, and Kirito also loses to the opponent. Asuna prepares to challenge Absolute Sword but notices it is past her dinnertime. Before logging out, she asks if the player is a Sword Art Online survivor. Lisbeth reveals Kirito believes it is impossible, noting that Dual Blades would have been assigned to the survivor instead.
EP 19Asuna confronts her mother and duels Yuuki in Absolute Sword
Nov 15, 2014Asuna logs out of ALO to dine with her mother Kyouko, who has hired a tutor and submitted an application for an oriented high school to accelerate Asuna’s education. Kyouko also reveals she investigated Kazuto, whom she opposes. Asuna leaves abruptly after insulting her mother, later lamenting her powerlessness in the real world despite her strength in SAO. The next day, Asuna meets Kirito on the 24th Floor of New Aincrad, where he shares impressions of Absolute Sword. Leafa, Lisbeth, and Silica arrive, reminding Asuna of her scheduled duel. At the island, Asuna discovers Absolute Sword is a girl named Yuuki. During their fight, Asuna uses Quadruple Pain and Starry Tear, but Yuuki blocks her attacks with a continuous Sword Skill. Yuuki halts the assault before defeating Asuna, stating satisfaction with the duel, and then asks for Asuna’s help in Aincrad.
EP 20Yuuki and the Sleeping Knights seek Asuna's aid to defeat the next Floor Boss.
Nov 22, 2014Yuuki invites Asuna to Ronbaru to meet the Sleeping Knights guild, including Jun, Nori, Siune, Talken, and Tecchi. They request her assistance in defeating the next Floor Boss with a single party to secure their names on the Monument of Swordsmen before winter ends. Asuna agrees, but later disconnects after a disagreement with Kyouko. Choosing not to burden Kazuto, she joins the guild to fight the boss. However, Asuna discovers other players spying on the battle. After the group is defeated, they rush back to the boss room, only to find a large raid group gathered. When the guild refuses their request to fight, Yuuki attacks the raid leader. Kirito then appears, blocking the path of the arriving raid party.

Asuna takes over healing duties, using Flashing Penetrator to eliminate enemy healers and their leader, allowing the group to reach the boss room. Inside, Asuna identifies the boss's weakness and directs Yuuki to attack. Utilizing Tecchi as a platform, Yuuki defeats the boss with her Original Sword Skill. The group plans to celebrate at Asuna’s home, where she asks to join the Sleeping Knights, receiving negative reactions. They visit the Monument of Swordsmen for a photo. Yuuki accidentally calls Asuna her elder sister, a slip made earlier in the battle. When Asuna points this out, Yuuki begins crying and abruptly logs out.
EP 22Asuna learns Yuuki's terminal illness truth and meets her in ALO
Dec 6, 2014Three days after the Monument of Swordsmen incident, Asuna questions Siune about Yuuki, who advises her to forget the Sleeping Knights. Asuna then meets Kazuto at school and receives an address for a hospital testing the Medicuboid, a medical FullDive machine. There, Doctor Kurahashi, Yuuki’s supervisor, explains the device’s use in terminal care and reveals Yuuki has AIDS from a blood transfusion during labor. He discloses that Yuuki has lived inside the machine for three years to avoid infection. Asuna also learns of Yuuki’s elder twin sister who died the previous year, causing Asuna to cry. Yuuki contacts Asuna via the Medicuboid, asking to meet at their first ALO location. Asuna logs in using an AmuSphere in the next room and rushes to find Yuuki, where they discuss Yuuki’s wish to return to school.
EP 23Asuna guides Yuuki through school and visits her old home to discuss family bonds and strength.
Dec 13, 2014Following her reunion with Yuuki, Asuna uses a Bidirectional Communication Probe to show her around the school, where Yuuki gains popularity among classmates. They then visit the soon-to-be-demolished Konno residence, prompting Yuuki to reflect on her mother’s protective nature. Yuuki advises Asuna that strength comes from honesty rather than endurance, suggesting she communicate openly with her own mother. Asuna invites Kyouko to log into ALO using a sub-account, where Kyouko recalls her childhood home. Asuna explains her desire to stay at her current school to support loved ones, realizing that others' happiness contributes to her own. Kyouko agrees but insists Asuna must improve her grades to attend university, making any potential transfer contingent on Asuna's academic progress. Asuna accepts this condition before departing.
EP 24Asuna bids farewell to Yuuki, who shares her final sword skill before passing away peacefully.
Dec 20, 2014Months after speaking with her mother, Asuna learns from Kurahashi that Yuuki is dying. Holding Yuuki’s hand, Asuna realizes her friend wishes to return to the virtual world, and Kurahashi permits her to FullDive. At the island where they first met, Yuuki creates a scroll containing her Original Sword Skill for Asuna’s protection. The Sleeping Knights, along with Kirito, Klein, Leafa, Lisbeth, Silica, Sinon, Yui, and many fairies, gather to support Yuuki, having been notified by Asuna to ensure she does not die alone. Yuuki explains that she found her reason for living in these fulfilling final moments. Asuna vows to meet her in another world. A week later, at the memorial service, Asuna meets An Shiun, whose condition is improving. Kazuto and Kurahashi discuss applying the Bidirectional Communication Probe for medical FullDive technology, using data Yuuki provided. Kurahashi reveals that Medicuboid designs originated from Akihiko Kayaba, via Professor Rinko Koujiro, who cared for Kayaba during the SAO Incident.
