Cornello orders Cray to eliminate them, and Rosé flees in terror after seeing Alphonse. Cornello attacks with a chimera and a giant bird. Edward defends himself using his automail limbs, revealing his mechanical nature. Cornello recognizes Edward as the Fullmetal Alchemist and realizes the brothers committed the ultimate sin of human transmutation.

Oct 11, 2003The Elrics reveal their failed attempt to revive their mother and warn Rosé that resurrecting her boyfriend Cain will yield similar tragic results. Cornello attacks them to drive them away, then displays a silhouette of Cain to soothe Rosé before ordering townspeople to capture the brothers. Ed transmutes metal to resemble Al, allowing himself to be taken. Cornello confiscates Ed’s pocket-watch, believing it enables circle-free alchemy. He catches Rosé visiting Cain, exposing the silhouette as a bird chimera, and leaves her to be eaten. Al saves her just in time. Cornello reveals his plan to use Lior for world domination, which Al broadcasts town-wide. Ed defeats Cornello using superior alchemy but discovers the philosopher’s stone is fake. Rosé confronts the Elrics, arguing their exposure caused more harm than Cornello’s deception, prompting Ed to urge her to stand on her own. As the Elrics depart, Lust and Gluttony salvage their scheme by killing Cornello and replacing him with Envy disguised as the real Cornello.

To save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm to bind Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor. Roy Mustang arrives after receiving a letter regarding their father, witnessing the aftermath. He attempts to recruit them as state alchemists, but Pinako Rockbell orders him away. The Elrics resist the takeover and are aided by Major Maes Hughes in defeating Bald and saving Hakuro. Upon arrival, military forces move to arrest the captives. Although Bald initially escapes, Mustang uses his Flame Alchemist abilities to restrain him. Following the incident, Mustang reveals that Hakuro has granted Ed special permission to take the state alchemist exam. Ed is surprised and annoyed by this news, suspecting that Mustang manipulated the situation to secure the opportunity for him.

Ed passes the interview and the practical test by using his quick thinking, courage, and unique ability to transmute without a circle to save the entire group of prospective state alchemists.

Nov 15, 2003After passing the state alchemy examination, Edward becomes a military alchemist and receives a rank symbol from Mustang. He attempts to question Tucker about a talking chimera created two years ago, but Tucker refuses to answer. Ed’s investigation at the state library is blocked, and Brigadier General Basque Grand orders him to stop, forcing the Elrics to leave Tucker's mansion. Despite this, they sneak into the basement laboratory where Tucker has just finished a new chimera to meet his yearly examination requirements. Ed deduces that Tucker used his wife for the first chimera and is now using Nina and Alexander for the new one. Tucker accuses Ed of guilt, prompting Ed to nearly kill him before the chimera intervenes. Upon Tucker's arrest, Ed frees the chimera, which encounters a scarred man declaring the creation a sin against nature. The man destroys the chimera, leaving the Elrics to find Nina and Alexander's remains on the alley wall.

Mustang permits the search on the condition he is informed of progress. Führer King Bradley officially titles Ed the Fullmetal Alchemist.

After Yoki invites Edward to his mansion using flattery and bribery, the inn is destroyed at nightfall. Alphonse rescues Kyle from the rubble. Edward reluctantly transmutes gold coins into coal bars, using them to buy the mine from Yoki under the pretense of a priceless transfer. He then turns the bars back to stone and sells the town to the residents for a single night's stay at the repaired inn. Finally, Edward defeats Yoki's alchemist servant Lyra, earning the title of hero.

He later recognizes her value as a tourism draw for the sinking city of Aquroya, acknowledging her complex role in the community despite her criminal actions.

However, the younger impostor, later identified as Fletcher Tringham, buys the medicine for him. That night, Edward and Alphonse infiltrate Mugear's mansion again. The older impostor, identified as Russell Tringham, attacks Edward with toxic crimson water. Fletcher intervenes to save Edward, revealing that the water has poisoned the town.
