Following his defeat against Ritchie in the fifth round, Ash spends time feeling upset about his loss. Misty persuades him to cheer for Ritchie, who has advanced to the quarterfinals. When Ritchie subsequently loses his match, both Ash and Ritchie are forced to engage in self-reflection to evaluate their abilities and determine whether they are truly skilled trainers. This period of introspection allows them to assess their growth and dedication to their craft as Pokémon trainers after experiencing the sting of defeat in the tournament.
