Shishio Challenges Kenshin's Philosophy While Saito and Aoshi Intervene
Aug 13, 1997Shishio argues that Kenshin misunderstands natural laws, asserting that survival of the fittest relies on chaos rather than a futile illusion of peace. He employs his Guren Kaina technique, the second Secret Sword, which causes a concussion in Kenshin. Saito bursts in using the Gatotsu First Stance to execute the Ishiki attack, but Shishio’s forehead metal plate deflects the blow. After attempting additional Gatotsu stances, Saito is defeated by Shishio. Sanosuke also tries to attack but fails. Finally, Aoshi appears to engage Shishio in combat.

Aoshi fails to defeat Shishio while Kenshin awakens to counter with Hiten Mitsurugi-ryuu techniques.
Aug 20, 1997Aoshi continues his struggle against Shishio, failing to secure victory even after executing the Kaiten Kenbu Rokuren technique. As time elapses, Kenshin regains consciousness through his swordsman spirit, surviving the severe wounds inflicted by Shishio. Just as Shishio prepares to deliver a final Guren Kaina blow, Kenshin recalls his promise to Kaoru to return to Tokyo together. This resolve allows him to launch the Kuzu-ryusen attack from the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryuu style, wounding Shishio. However, Shishio rises again, sustained by his own swordsman spirit. Despite his exhaustion and injuries, Kenshin readies his ultimate battōjutsu technique, the Amakakeru Ryuu no Hirameki, to end the confrontation.

Shishio faces defeat as his body burns while Hōji attacks the arena
Sep 3, 1997Shishio prepares to use the Kaguzuchi attack, the final of his Secret Sword technique, to counter Kenshin's move. This results in a void between the two attacks, which temporarily immobilizes Shishio, enabling Kenshin to strike him with an immensely strong consecutive hit. Even after miraculously standing back up, Shishio's blood starts evaporating and he begins screaming in pain, since he has fought far longer than fifteen minutes. However, Shishio sets his sights on Kenshin and Yumi, impaling them both, even after Yumi tries to stop Kenshin from killing Shishio. Yumi dies happily, knowing she did something useful for once. As the battle continues, the battle is once again at a standstill. However, Shishio is killed by spontaneous combustion. Hōji, refusing to accept Shishio's defeat, maniacally attempts to destroy the Inferno Arena to kill Kenshin, Sanosuke, Saito, and Aoshi.

Kenshin and allies escape Inferno Arena while Saito is left behind
Sep 10, 1997Sanosuke and Aoshi rescue Kenshin from the collapsing structure, allowing them to flee the eruption. Saito remains trapped because his severe leg injuries prevent him from jumping the broken bridge. The Inferno Arena is destroyed, appearing to kill Saito. The trio reunites with Kaoru, Yahiko, and Misao. Chō arrives to report on the fate of the Ten Swords. Meanwhile, Shishio, Yumi, and Hōji meet in the underworld to plan an ambush.

Yahiko tours Mount Hiei with Sanosuke while Kenshin visits a grave
Sep 17, 1997Yahiko visits Mount Hiei, and Sanosuke shows him where that battle with Shishio took place. Meanwhile, Kenshin visits an unknown woman's grave, and places flowers by it. Also at this time, Megumi explains to Kaoru the severity of Kenshin's wounds, and that it is important to keep him from doing anything that dangerous again. Finally, the group gets on the train to Tokyo, with Misao waving to them and telling them to visit again. After the train departs Saito is seen saying that he and Kenshin will meet again one day and settle the score that they have. When the gang reaches the road to the dojo, Kaoru extends her hand and welcomes Kenshin home.

Oct 14, 1997Kenshin Himura goes fishing to provide food. At the river, he encounters an elderly man who shares a legend about fireflies. The story reveals the man’s deceased lover, who waited for him to return from his long sword mastery quest. The old man conveys that every man meets one unforgettable woman. Kenshin listens to this poignant narrative and subsequently returns with an iris flower. He does not present the flower to Kaoru Kamiya, keeping the memento to himself after hearing the tale of enduring love and loss.

Foreign Prince Attacked by Bandits Before Resembling Yahiko Myojin
Oct 28, 1997While returning from a play, Kenshin and Kaoru witness a foreign prince being assaulted by bandits. Kenshin steps in to help, and because the prince sustains injuries, they bring him back to the dojo for care. It is discovered that the prince bears a striking resemblance to Yahiko Myojin. Consequently, Yahiko assumes the prince's identity to attend an upcoming banquet. During the event, the bandits launch another attack. Kenshin and Sanosuke Sagara are present to defend Yahiko and ensure his safety throughout the confrontation.

Sanosuke adopts a dog named Notaro after it steals a politician's key from masked attackers.
Nov 4, 1997A politician hides a safe key in an alley while fleeing the Kenwadan, a gang of masked men. A dog retrieves the key, leading the pursuers into a river. The next morning, Sanosuke finds the dog while praying for dice luck and brings it to the dojo under Megumi Takani’s care. He names the dog Notaro, who disrupts the group by eating their food and burying their belongings. Sanosuke posts flyers to find the owner, allowing the Kenwadan to locate the animal. While Kenshin and Yahiko learn of the Kenwadan situation from the police, Sanosuke confronts and defeats the gang in a nearby forest to protect the dog.

Nov 11, 1997After Tae Sekihara explains the meaning of an engagement ring, Kaoru begins daydreaming about marrying Kenshin. Meanwhile, Kenshin goes fishing and returns with a catfish containing an engagement ring. Unaware of its significance, he accepts Tae's advice to give it to Kaoru. Sanosuke encounters a man attempting suicide and learns the ring originally belonged to him, having been discarded due to a misunderstanding with his fiancée. Sanosuke recruits Kenshin and Yahiko to retrieve the ring without hurting Kaoru. The trio temporarily intoxicates Kaoru to confess the truth before returning the ring to its rightful owner, allowing him to reconcile with his fiancée.

Misao investigates a Kyoto murder linked to strange carvings and a death threat.
Nov 18, 1997Misao Makimachi informs the group about a murder in Kyoto where a politician’s body bears strange carvings. Aoshi Shinomori declines a request for protection from another politician facing a written death threat. Misao sends the letter to Okina, who identifies the language as Portuguese or Dutch and notes the symbol matches the corpse’s carvings. The assassin kills the politician and puts Misao into a coma. The group travels to Kyoto and discovers the killer uses Hiten Mitsurugi-ryuu battoujutsu. Kenshin visits Seijuro Hiko, who reveals the assassin is Shougo Amakusa, a Christian swordsman capable of defeating the Kuzu-ryuusen attack.

Shougo defeats Chou and reveals his revenge motive for persecuted Christians.
Nov 25, 1997Shougo appears to where Chou Sawagejou is protecting yet another politician. He easily defeats Chou, and flawlessly kills the politician. When the groups goes to visit Chou in a hospital, it is confirmed that Shuogo surpasses Kenshin in skill. Okina finds out that the three men killed were responsible for persecuting Christians during the Edo dynasty. Sanosuke enters a cavern behind a waterfall and finds a Christian occult gathered in front of Shougo's younger sister Lady Magdalia and her childhood friend Shouzo. Sanosuke follows the two outside, and later assaults a band of police officers who were after a medallion in their possession. An agitated Shouzo manages to cause Sanosuke to delve into the waterfall, however soon losing hold of the medallion. Shougo, unaware Sanosuke holds the medallion, proves his divine status to a Christian crowd through miracles. Kaoru expresses pity for the persecuted Christians to Yahiko. They observe Christian children drop a medallion. Kaoru discovers a cathedral location inside a cave house. Meanwhile, Kenshin and Sanosuke are surrounded by dogs led by a round man with a whistle in another cave section.

Kenshin Saves His Attacker and Faces Shougo's Blindness Attack
Dec 9, 1997A round man loses control of his dogs after breaking a whistle, forcing Kenshin to save them both. Confused by orders to kill a supposed demon, the man chains Kenshin to a tree and consults Lady Magdalia. Kaoru confronts Shougo about his mission. Kenshin frees himself and waits as the group arrives. Shougo fights Kenshin to prove his superiority. Kenshin uses the Kuzu-ryuusen technique to show mercy instead of the Amakakeru Ryuu no Hirameki. Despite this, Shougo blinds Kenshin, causing him to fall off a cliff into the water below.

Dec 16, 1997Sanosuke falls into a cave crevice and encounters Lady Magdalia, who treats his injuries at her hillside residence. They argue regarding Shougo, during which Sanosuke admits to losing a medallion. Lady Magdalia subsequently locks him in a room. Meanwhile, Shougo conspires with his followers Kaiou and Santo to overthrow the Meiji government by inciting civil war, though they dispute the cost and methods. Lady Magdalia retrieves a gun and returns to the locked room, only to find Sanosuke missing. He continues his search for the medallion but is interrupted by Shouzo, leading to a mutual weakening combat exchange. The episode concludes with Kaiou and Santo receiving the lost medallion from Lady Magdalia.
