Following two weeks of training, Yamato adapts to the regimen and officially defeats scholarship student Kenji in a time trial, completing the 100 meters in 10.98 seconds. Rather than offering congratulations, Suzuka tells him that she despises him, adding pressure as he must now uphold the expectations of Miyamoto and Kinugasu, the track team captain. Later, Yamato discovers that Suzuka is going home to visit Kazuki Tsuda, a revelation that troubles him. Upon finding a photo of Suzuka with another man in her room, he impulsively runs after her without hesitation.
