The following day, Madoka and Sayaka discover an activating Grief Seed. Sayaka and Kyubey enter the portal while Madoka finds Mami. Homura attempts to warn Mami, but Mami binds her to prevent interference. Madoka expresses her desire to become a magical girl to help others, which makes Mami happy despite her loneliness. When the Grief Seed activates, Mami fights the witch, which transforms into a giant caterpillar that decapitates and kills her instantly. Homura defeats the witch and claims the Grief Seed, leaving Madoka mortified and Sayaka resentful.
EP 4Sayaka contracts with Kyubey to save Kyousuke while Madoka faces a witch's torture.
Jan 28, 2011Sayaka worries about Kyousuke, while Madoka remains too fearful to become a magical girl after Mami's death. Homura informs Madoka that normal people will only consider Mami missing, warning that kindness may betray her. Frustrated by his inability to play the violin due to his condition, Kyousuke drives Sayaka to make a contract with Kyubey to cure his hands. Meanwhile, Madoka stops Hitomi Suzuki and others from committing suicide via detergent poisoning, but is ambushed by a witch who tortures her with Mami's death memories. Sayaka arrives as a magical girl to rescue Madoka, shocking Homura. Kyubey then meets Kyouko Sakura, who is displeased that Sayaka has taken over the territory Mami previously protected.
EP 5Madoka and Homura worry about Sayaka while Kyouko clashes with her during a witch hunt.
Feb 4, 2011Madoka and Homura express concern regarding Sayaka’s choice to become a magical girl. Sayaka visits Kyousuke and feels happy that he is finally able to play his violin once again. Madoka asks Homura to become friends with Sayaka, not wanting her to suffer the same fate as Mami, though Homura's words, that those who become magical girls cannot be saved, do nothing to comfort her. Later that day, Madoka joins Sayaka on patrol, where they find a witch's familiar, but it escapes when Sayaka's attacks are blocked by Kyouko, who only cares about collecting Grief Seeds from mature witches. Kyouko's selfishness angers Sayaka, and the two magical girls clash violently, with Madoka unable to do anything to stop them. As Kyouko gets the upper hand, Madoka considers using her wish to stop the fighting, but Homura steps in before she can do so.
EP 6Homura warns Madoka while Sayaka fights Kyouko and loses her Soul Gem
Feb 11, 2011Homura knocks Sayaka unconscious and orders Kyouko to leave, then urges Madoka to abandon any involvement with Sayaka. Kyubey informs Sayaka about Madoka’s potential as a magical girl, but Sayaka refuses to let Madoka join. Homura warns Kyouko that Walpurgisnacht approaches in two weeks, leading them to form an alliance. Meanwhile, Sayaka ignores Madoka’s pleas and expresses hatred toward Homura for Mami’s death. Kyouko provokes Sayaka into a fight on a highway bridge the next evening. Madoka intervenes by throwing Sayaka’s Soul Gem off the bridge to stop the battle, causing Sayaka to collapse. Kyubey explains that the Soul Gem holds the magical girl’s soul, with the body acting as a shell controlled only within 100 metres. Homura retrieves the gem and revives Sayaka.
EP 7Sayaka confronts Kyubey while Kyouko reveals her tragic past and Hitomi demands a confession.
Feb 18, 2011Sayaka becomes furious with Kyubey for withholding the truth, but he forces her to endure the pain she would have suffered fighting Kyouko. The following day, Madoka questions Homura about Kyubey’s motives and silence. Kyouko takes Sayaka to a church once owned by her father, explaining that she contracted with Kyubey to validate his sermons. However, her father discovered her wish, leading him to murder his family and himself, leaving Kyouko isolated. Sayaka apologizes but rejects Kyouko’s advice to prioritize herself. Later, Kyousuke returns to school, prompting Hitomi to reveal her own love for him and demand Sayaka confess within one day. Overwhelmed, Sayaka tells Madoka she feels inhuman. That night, she recklessly attacks a witch, ignoring Kyouko’s assistance and disregarding the severe damage to her own body.
EP 8Sayaka's Descent Into Darkness After Rejecting Help and Facing Hopelessness

To protect Madoka, Homura attempts to kill Sayaka, but Kyouko intervenes. Kyubey pressures Madoka to wish for Sayaka, yet Homura shoots Kyubey, breaking down and urging Madoka against self-sacrifice. Madoka feels she has met Homura before and searches for Sayaka. A replacement Kyubey identifies Homura as an entity from another timeline. Kyouko finds Sayaka, implied to have killed two men on a train. Sayaka admits her stupidity as her dark Soul Gem shatters into a Grief Seed. Kyubey reflects on the term magical girl as a prelude to becoming a witch.

Mar 4, 2011Homura manipulates time to rescue Kyouko from a witch and delivers Sayaka’s body to Madoka, revealing that Sayaka transformed due to despair. Kyubey explains that Incubators harvest energy from the transition between hope and despair to prevent the universe's heat death, viewing emotions as illnesses. Desperate to save Sayaka, Kyouko asks Madoka to help reach her human feelings and retrieve her Soul Gem. During the confrontation, Kyouko shields Madoka from attacks while Madoka attempts to communicate with Sayaka. When Sayaka attacks Madoka, Homura evacuates Madoka, allowing Kyouko to sacrifice herself to destroy the witch. Kyubey taunts Homura, noting that without Kyouko, stopping Walpurgisnacht requires Madoka to become a magical girl.

Mar 11, 2011In an alternate timeline, hospitalized Homura befriends cheerful Madoka and is rescued from a witch by magical girls Madoka and Mami. Despite Homura’s warnings, tragedy strikes again as Sayaka turns into a witch and is killed by the remaining magical girls. Mami then attacks Kyouko and aims at Homura, but Madoka stops Mami with lethal force. With their Soul Gems empty, Madoka gives her last Grief Seed to Homura, begging her to return to the past to avoid Kyubey’s lies and asking Homura to kill her before she transforms. Homura returns with a colder demeanor, trying to prevent Kyubey from contacting Madoka and fighting witches alone, but these efforts fail as she continues looping through timelines in a desperate hope to save Madoka.
EP 11Homura's Time Loops Create Madoka's Witch Potential Amidst Walpurgisnacht Crisis
Apr 22, 2011Kyubey explains to Homura that her repeated time travel to save Madoka has made her the focal point of countless timelines, thereby amplifying Madoka’s potential to become a powerful witch. Madoka confronts Homura, who admits her inability to defeat Walpurgisnacht and begs Madoka to let her protect her. During a city-wide storm, Homura fights Walpurgisnacht alone but is nearly defeated. Upon learning from Kyubey that Homura risks becoming a witch if she loses hope, Madoka decides to intervene. Despite Junko’s attempts to stop her, Madoka leaves to find Homura. As Homura nears despair and transformation, Madoka arrives with Kyubey, announcing her intention to make a wish.

She defeats Walpurgisnacht and spreads across spacetime, absorbing despair to ensure fallen magical girls disappear peacefully rather than becoming witches. Homura witnesses Madoka destroying the witch born from her Soul Gem, after which Madoka fades into a higher plane, becoming omnipresent yet forgotten by humans. She leaves Homura a ribbon to preserve her memory. Madoka joins Sayaka, who succumbed to her fate after Madoka respected her wish to heal Kyosuke. Homura returns to a world where Madoka does not exist, while Mami and Kyouko remain alive.
