Kenshin challenges Shishio to a duel, but Shishio declines, claiming the wanderer is too weak. Instead, Shishio orders his subordinate Sojiro to fight Kenshin in his place. Shishio and Yumi Komagata then depart from the mansion. Sojiro and Kenshin engage in combat using the battōjutsu drawing technique, a clash that causes severe damage to both of their swords. After the fight, Sojiro leaves the mansion and instructs Kenshin to acquire a new sword before they meet again.
