The Fake Kidnapping and Hostage Case
Jul 22, 1996Takei Naoko, daughter of businessman Takei Katsuhiko, is held hostage by a kidnapper demanding $5 million dollars. When authorities approach the kidnapper, the van drives off a cliff and into the river, leaving both dead. Conan later befriends a woman named Hanai Akiko. He overhears a conversation between her and her boss, Katsuhiko. After finding scuba gear, Conan is delighted to know that Naoko may still be alive. While away, Akiko calls Katsuhiko and tells him that Naoko is still alive and to come alone and bring $5 million cash to the same warehouse. When Katsuhiko goes to the warehouse, he is shocked when Akiko reveals herself as the kidnapper. Naoko was never kidnapped or in harm; Akiko was the kidnapper and victim. Akiko explains that when Katsuhiko drove her father's company into bankruptcy, her father murdered her mother and brother Hanai Masahito, before killing himself. The money that Katsuhiko brought is counterfeit, enraging Akiko, who proceeds to try and murder Katsuhiko by burning him alive. Conan, having hid in the car's trunk, persuades Akiko to spare Katsuhiko or she will cause Naoko to suffer the way she has. Naoko is found and she hugs Akiko for the last time as she is arrested.

The Murder Case Involving the Pet Dog Named John
Jul 29, 1996Conan, Ran, and Kogoro investigate the death of Maehara Takeshi, who was killed by a dog named John owned by Sakaguchi Masayoshi. Suspicions arise because Takeshi previously bullied Masayoshi’s son, Masato, leading to his suicide years ago. Inspector Megure warns that John faces euthanasia. Sanae reveals Masayoshi called shortly before 9:00 and placed the phone near John. She utilized sedatives and her car to convince Ayumi they remained at the office, while actually being at the condo during the murder. Ayumi inadvertently incriminated Yoko by placing a trading card from the office into the condo’s collection. Yoko confesses to the killing, citing revenge for her brother’s unsolved kidnapping and murder, and surrenders to the police.

Tatsuya displays an arrogant personality while performing his song "Bloody Venus." Former member Sumii Go delivers food, and Tatsuya collapses after eating a rice ball. Conan detects cyanide and deduces murder. He examines a photograph showing Tatsuya, Katsumi, and two women, one identified as Mari despite her altered appearance. Using Shinichi’s voice, Conan explains that cyanide coated Tatsuya’s jacket, which transferred to his hand when he removed it, and subsequently to the rice ball. The killer is revealed to be Mari, who switched jackets to hide evidence and possessed Tatsuya’s lighter. She confesses that plastic surgery strained their relationship, but Tatsuya actually loved her original appearance. A love song on the photograph’s back reveals his true feelings, causing Mari to weep in regret.
