Saichi "The Immortal" Sugimoto learns about a hidden wealth of gold stolen from the Ainu, and the only way to find it is to decode the tattoos of a group of prisoners, made by the man who had stolen the gold. Sugimoto intends to pursue this rumor with the help of Asirpa, a wise Ainu girl whose father was slain and pilfered from.

Sugimoto emerges victorious in his fight with Nihei Tetsuzou, and he is taken down by Retar and his companion. Tanigaki tells Sugimoto of Lt. Tsurumi's plan to take the Ainu gold and take over the entire army, or at least separate from it.

Hijikata's group only gets stronger as they obtain a new katana to be wielded by Toshizou Hijikata himself. Shiraishi investigates the group only to be found out, and he lies himself into cooperating with them, seemingly betraying Sugimoto's group.

Shiraishi is ordered to get Kazuo Henmi's tattoo, which Sugimoto does without any issue, despite how well Henmi hid his identity. Now, Private Hyakunosuke Ogata of the 7th division develops an interest in the Immortal Sugimoto.
