N.Y. Komachi

Konohana Shino is the only child of a father who raised her as a boy during Japan’s Meiji era. She excels in both academics and martial arts. The birth of a younger brother changes her status, as her father insists she conform to traditional feminine roles, including marriage to a man she does not like. Upset by these expectations, Shino encounters Daniel Irving, a foreigner who speaks of greater freedoms for women in New York. Inspired, she flees home and hides on a ship bound for Hokkaido, not the United States as she had hoped. Daniel is also on the ship, complicating her plans. Despite the unexpected turn, Shino sees this as a chance to start anew, though the era makes relationships with foreigners difficult.
