Lupin, Jigen, and Fujiko execute a successful heist, but Zenigata incapacitates Lupin with a tranquilizer dart and transports him to jail. Fujiko attempts multiple rescue operations without success, while Jigen refuses to assist, asserting that Lupin can escape whenever he chooses. One year passes, and Lupin remains incarcerated as his execution date approaches. Following Fujiko's continued efforts to liberate him, Jigen assumes the disguise of a priest to investigate the reasons behind Lupin's refusal to flee from prison.
