Yamato Keisuke, a freestyle swimmer, and Ninomiya Ami, a diver, come from families that own competing confectionery businesses. The rivalry began two generations ago when Grandfather Ninomiya created an owl-shaped cake. In response, Grandfather Yamato developed a similar cake featuring owl ears. The added detail helped Yamato's sales, causing financial strain on the Ninomiya shop. As both cakes were priced the same, the difference proved significant, leading to the decline of Ninomiya's business. Grandfather Ninomiya became ill from the stress and, before dying, said, "I was killed by the Yamatos." This statement solidified a lasting feud between the two families.
