Pursued by Ukyo, Kambei and his group arrive at an inn in Kougakyo, a lawless sanctuary beyond the Magistrate's control. There, they meet Shichiroji, Kambei's old friend and battle companion. Ukyo and other hunters track the group to this location. Shichiroji reveals a secret passage that allows the group to escape their pursuers. After providing this crucial aid, Shichiroji leaves his girlfriend behind to rejoin Kambei and fight alongside him once again. The episode focuses on this reunion and the strategic escape facilitated by Shichiroji's knowledge of the area.
