Hajime Kindaichi is recruited by Mystery Research Team leader Ruiko Sakuragi to address the final unsolved case. A warning from the "After-School Magician" predicts the principal's death if the old school building is demolished. That night, the Mystery Club and security officer Ryozo Tachibana witness a masked figure before discovering an empty locked biology room containing a candle pentagram. The following morning, Sakuragi is found hanged in the same manner as the seventh mystery. It is later revealed that she discovered a student's corpse hidden in the walls, dating back ten years, thereby solving the final mystery. Hajime vows to uncover the truth behind these events.

Driven by grief and a desire for revenge, Kamiya flees to the roof and jumps to death, hoping to reunite with Fuyuko in heaven.

Akira Kamoshita of Otoba Publishing House sends Hajime to attend. During the event, Tachibana harasses Miyuki, prompting Hajime to intervene and accidentally remove Tachibana's hairpiece. In response, Tachibana disqualifies Otoba Publishing House from the competition. When Hajime later attempts to apologize, he discovers Tachibana's body, having been bludgeoned to death by an unknown assailant who also knocked Hajime unconscious. Inspector Shigeru Nagashima of the Nagano Prefectural Police determines that all evidence implicates Hajime, leading to his arrest despite Inspector Kenmochi's objections. Hajime subsequently escapes police custody and sets out to identify the true killer.
