Jan 13, 1998Kenshin quickly overcomes an attacker from Kaiou’s group after being trapped in a noose. Elsewhere, Shouzo remains pinned beneath a heavy rock, requiring assistance from Sanosuke and Lady Magdalia so he can inform Shougo about the situation. Sanosuke effortlessly knocks out another of Kaiou’s subordinates, but Lady Magdalia begins hyperventilating due to her condition. Kenshin, Kaoru, Yahiko, and Misao arrive to help the pair exit the cave. Upon discovering that Lady Magdalia suffers from tuberculosis, Sanosuke rushes to locate Sir Elsten for medical treatment and to report the army’s formation. Meanwhile, Shouzo eavesdrops on Kaiou’s plans and attempts to engage him in combat but is defeated. As a final measure, Shouzo uses pipe bombs provided by Sanosuke, resulting in Kaiou’s death.

Later, Shougo visits the tombstone, reads the letter Lady Magdalia wrote, and heads toward Holland.

With no lodging available, the group reluctantly stays at the impostor’s temple, where they assist with dojo duties in exchange for accommodation. The Tengu, growing impatient, hire a swordsman to eliminate the fake Battousai. The swordsman arrives at the dojo demanding a duel. Kenshin returns from shopping and defeats the challenger, saving the impostor. Kenshin permits the man to retain the title of the legendary manslayer, and the group departs to return home.

Misao and Sanosuke challenge the artist to hit Kenshin as a condition for matchmaking. The artist fails to strike Kenshin repeatedly. Realizing Kaoru's love for Kenshin is the source of her beauty, the artist finds his inspiration and completes a portrait. When Kaoru reveals the abstract drawing to the group, they flee in laughter.

Yutaro places a rock on an altar, which ignites the cave. Misanagi, leader of the Sanada Ninjas, appears to warn them that the path leads to the bottom of an abyss. As the group descends toward the cave base, the floor collapses beneath them, trapping them in the dangerous descent.

Yutaro treats Kaita’s wounds, and in return, Kaita reveals a tunnel leading back to the cave’s pathway. However, their progress is soon obstructed by Zan and Ren, two elite members of the Sanada Ninjas who intervene and disrupt the group’s movement.
